OAKLAND, California – A 15-year-old girl was shot in Auckland over the weekend and died of her injuries, police said. Antioch’s Camiyla Brown was shot at around 7pm on Saturday at 2900th Avenue at 68th Avenue in East Oakland. He died the next morning in hospital. The girl was visiting a friend in an apartment, according to a friend’s neighbor. “She was visiting other children. She was my neighbor’s eldest daughter who is about 18 years old, she was visiting her,” the neighbor, who did not want to be named, told KTVU. “I’m very scared, to be honest,” he said. “I have children about the same age.” Auckland City Councilman Lauren Taylor said the shooting affected him as well. He has a daughter who is about to turn 13. “My heart is heavy. It is broken for this young woman. It is devastating,” Taylor said. “I can not even imagine what the family is going through.” “The tragedy of extinguishing the life of a 15-year-old girl in Auckland is the epitome of the daily violence seen by our townspeople and police,” said Barry Donnelan, president of the Auckland Police Association. He went on to say that Auckland has only 652 police officers – the lowest number in eight years to tackle the high crime of the decade. “When will the people of Auckland call on elected officials to take responsibility for their inability to provide basic levels of public safety?” Donellan asked rhetorically.
