SYLVA, NC – A 3-year-old girl was killed after being dragged over Whitewater Falls near Cashiers, NC, about 60 miles from Asheville. Jackson County Emergency Management received a call to 911 around 5:50 p.m. on Sunday by someone who reported that a little girl was “dragged into the water at the top of the waterfalls” and taken away by the current, the sheriff’s office said. The U.S. Forest Service describes Whitewater Falls as the tallest waterfall east of the Rocky Mountains, sinking about 411 feet (125 meters). Nevaeh Jade Newswanger from Denver, PA, had visited the waterfall with her family, according to a press release from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office. Rescue teams from Jackson, Transylvania, Haywood, Henderson and Okone counties responded to the falls and launched rescue operations to locate the child, the press release said. They located the body of the child trapped in an area of the waterfall. Recovery operations began on Monday when the child was pulled around around 1am
