The Ajax boss had emerged as the clear favorite for United’s job following an interview for the post in March. While others remained in the fray, such as former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino, Ten Hague has begun “advanced” contract talks with the club and is expected to join as soon as Ralph Rangnik’s interim reign ends. However, Rangnik remained in charge of this week’s training session as United aim to restore their four-man squad for Everton on Sunday. Here’s what Mirror Football was observed by the session, which comes at a critical time for the present and the future of the Red Devils. 1. The return of Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo missed the last game of Manchester United due to illness and the points lost against Leicester City in his absence can prove to be significant. He is back now, however, and United may well need his goals at Goodison Park. The veteran was called to leave Old Trafford as his return has not been fully developed according to plan. However, the club record without this season will be very worrying around the club, not only for the upcoming game but for the rest of the season and beyond. Ronaldo posted an update on Instagram after the absence of the match with Leicester, giving the fans the hope that he will fully recover in time to face Everton. His presence in training will only reinforce this feeling. Ronaldo returned after an illness ( Picture: Manchester United via Getty Imag)

2. Rasford’s opportunity for rebounds

“That killed Marcus Rasford today, who did not play for this team,” Gary Neville told Monday Night Football after the English forward was left out of the starting line-up on Saturday. Despite Ronaldo’s absence, Rangnik started with Rasford on the bench, with the 24-year-old playing just 35 minutes off the bench. “I know he was poor, I know he lacks confidence, but Cristiano Ronaldo to retire this morning and Paul Pogba to come in and change the game system and the way he approaches the game and not just put Marcus Rasford. “as a striker as an exchange straight, having trained with the players for the last 10 days,” said Neville. “Overall, there are a lot of things in this club that are uncertain.” It was another blow for the English international after his omission from the last eleven of Gareth Southgate. However, he has responded in the only way he knows how, making his case in training and hoping to be rewarded with a start on Saturday. 3. Lingard gets involved after Rooney’s comments

Jesse Lingard has struggled for a few minutes this season and is expected to leave Old Trafford when his contract expires in the summer. However, former United star Wayne Rooney said such a move would be too hasty.

“I think Jesse Lingard should play for them because he brings energy, he brings quality,” Rooney told Monday Night Football. The English international was an unused sideline against Leicester, however, and the club has done little to show that they will benefit from a stay in Manchester. Lingard played less than 30 minutes of first-team football in March and has just 199 league minutes under his belt all season. However, United may feel they need to make drastic changes this weekend, so can they get away with it? 4. Opportunity for young people

Rangnick has not been afraid to invite youngsters since taking office in the middle of the season. The most typical example was Anthony Elanga, with the Swede giving many opportunities, but he is not the only one. Hannibal has joined the first team this season, rising from under-23, and has also established himself as an international Tunisian. He was an unused substitute in the recent Manchester derby, but has yet to appear in the league this season. There have also been reports of Alejandro Garnazzo being linked to the elderly. The teenager recently won his first call-up to Argentina and hopes to be closer to a team on match day after playing most of his under-23 football this season. 5. Ranknik tries to help his successor

It will be important for Ralph Rangnick to avoid the distractions that seem great. The discussion about the next United coach was long and complicated, but the solution is as close as ever. When Rangnick was appointed, the move was made in order for the German to help his permanent successor settle down. Part of that process may have involved a finish in the top four, however, and that would be a big question. With Arsenal and Tottenham both having a significant advantage over United in the fourth leg, they could find themselves preparing for a season under a new high-profile coach but without Champions League football. All Rangnik can do at the moment is get things moving in the right direction on the training ground and put the team in a position to perform on the pitch. read more Gary Neville claims that Manchester United’s attempts to copy Manchester City’s plan failed read more In the renewal of the multimillion-dollar training ground of Man Utd, as the club seeks the contribution of the players
