Six Republican lawmakers in parliament opposed a bill passed Wednesday that seeks to encourage efforts to document and preserve evidence of Russian war crimes during the war in Ukraine. The bill, introduced in House March 29 and funded by Texas GOP MP Michael McCaul, seeks to “direct the President to submit to Congress a report on the United States Government’s efforts to collect, analyze and retain evidence and information related to war crimes and any other atrocities committed during the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine from 24 February 2022 “. The bill, entitled Law on Preventing and Accountability for War Crimes in Ukraine, states that Russian forces deliberately attacked civilians and civilian buildings, engaged in unnecessary destruction of property, illegally deported civilians and took hostages. There were 418 votes in favor and four abstentions. Seven Republicans – represented by Tom Massey of Kentucky, Scott Perry of Pennsylvania; Marjorie Taylor Green of Georgia; Warren Davidson of Ohio; A Cheney spokesman, however, told The Hill that Cheney’s negative vote was wrong and that he would inform the House of Representatives that he wanted to vote in favor of the bill. Following its vote Wednesday, the bill will go to the Senate for a vote. Massie, Perry, Greene, Davidson, Biggs, Gosar and Cheney did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
