Police say a mother was crossing the street with her daughter in a stroller at 9 a.m. on Avenue Des Recollets near Fleury Street when they were hit by a turning vehicle. “The victim, a two-year-old girl, was seriously injured and taken to hospital in a critical condition,” SPVM spokeswoman Mariane Allaire-Morin said. “Unfortunately, she was pronounced dead at the hospital.”

CUTTING ARRANGEMENT MAY BE FACTOR: POLICE

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident. According to the police, one possibility is the configuration of the roads. On one side of the intersection, rue Des Recollets has traffic in each direction. on the other side, it’s a one-way street heading towards the intersection. Residents say driving through it can be confusing. “I see them always turning around, because they always think it’s going down, the road,” Tony Muscatello said. Muscatello said the incident has shocked the neighborhood. “I’ve been here 15 years, and I’ve never seen this. Never.”

MOTHER, MISSION GUIDE TO THE HOSPITAL

The girl’s 40-year-old mother was injured in the lower body and was hospitalized. Authorities do not fear for her life. The driver was also taken to hospital for treatment of nervous shock. Resident Donald Cote remembers seeing the driver after the crash. “I saw the lady who drove the car when I arrived, sitting in the other one, in agony. She was barely walking, in shock,” he said.
