Smoke was billowing from the four-bedroom flat as a fire raged throughout the flat and the balcony, which appears to be on the top floor of a 17-storey block of flats, according to footage shared on Twitter by London’s fire service. The cause of the fire is currently unknown. The blaze follows news that fire services in London faced their busiest day since the second world war on Tuesday as record temperatures fueled fires across the UK. London Mayor Sadiq Khan said the fire service would normally expect 500 calls on a busy day, but received more than 2,600 calls on Tuesday when more than a dozen fires were raging at the same time. He added Wednesday morning that he spoke with the fire commissioner, who expressed concern about the possibility of further fires. The London Fire Brigade said firefighters were also battling a blaze involving around a hectare of grass across the block at the junction between Manwood Street and Silverland Street. The brigade said its 999 control officers had received more than 105 calls to the fire. Fire crews from Shadwell, Dowgate, Dockhead, Shoreditch and surrounding fire stations are at the scene.
