The York Regional Police announced on Thursday the arrest of 23-year-old Riyasat Singh from Brampton in connection with the attack that took place on December 20, 2021, in an underground garage at King William Crescent, near Yonge Street and Bantry Avenue.
Police said they received a call from a woman who was attacked and beaten with a frying pan. An anxious citizen was able to intervene, police said, and the suspects fled in a vehicle.
It was retrieved within hours of the attack and later found to have been stolen in Toronto.
The victim, 37-year-old Elnaz Hajtamiri, was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
As a result of their investigation, police were able to identify two suspects and arrested Singh in Brampton on Wednesday.
He faces attempted murder, attempted kidnapping, possession of property acquired through a crime of more than $ 5,000 and malice of less than $ 5,000.
Police say the other suspect, identified as 23-year-old Harshdeep Binner, is wanted on a warrant across Canada. He is wanted for attempted murder, kidnapping, possession of property obtained with a crime over $ 5,000 and malice under $ 5,000.
Police believe the two suspects are either involved in Hajtamiri’s disappearance or can identify those responsible.
“Our officers continue to work closely with Ontario provincial police on their ongoing investigation into the abduction of Elnaz Hajtamiri,” said York District Police.
Haitamiri has been missing since Jan. 12, when police believe she was abducted from her home in Trailwood Place on Wasaga Beach.
According to Ontario Provincial Police, which is leading the kidnapping investigation, three black men dressed in police equipment stormed Hajtimiri’s home and took her away.
The suspects fled along with Hajtamiri in a white, 2016-2022, Lexus RX sport utility vehicle.
OPP held a press conference earlier this week, renewing its call for information on the incident.
“It’s at this point that despite calls for information about the vehicle from Hajtamiri’s abduction or anyone involved in either of the two incidents, there is no information to provide either motive or motive for these crimes,” he said. Det. Insp. said Martin Graham in a virtual press conference Tuesday morning.
Graham added that police have not received any ransom demands.
Hajtamiri’s mother, Fariba, who lives in Iran, also asked the public to help police find her daughter.
“As a mother, I beg you to guide us and tell us everything you know,” she said when she was translated into English in a video released during the press conference.
“Please, please help us. We live a desperate life. “
