The stakes are high for Morrison’s center-right Liberal coalition government as it confronts the opposition Labor Party. The government has reacted strongly to the handling of vaccines in Australia, and more recently to what critics say has been a slow response to the deadly floods that have ravaged parts of Queensland and New South Wales.
In a speech, Morrison acknowledged that Australia had faced “incredibly difficult times” and noted his government’s success in financial and health measures ahead of Covid-19. He said his government would continue to focus on building a stronger economy and “the greatest rebuilding of our defense and security forces since World War II.”
“[This election is] a choice between a strong and tried government team that has proven our ability to make difficult and difficult choices in difficult times and a Labor opposition that has focused so much on politics in recent years that they still can not tell you what they are doing, “Who they are, what they believe in and what they stand for,” Morrison said.
Opposition leader Anthony Albanese will try to lead the Australian Labor Party back to the federal government for the first time since 2013. The Labor Party has rallied its platform around promises to fight rising living costs and promote growth and employment. , affordable childcare and local production.
Albanese released a video on Twitter on Saturday calling on Morrison to call an election, saying “Australians are used to Morrison waiting for them” and referred to what he described as a slow action in the release of the Covid-19 vaccine, the response in fires and flood support by the Morrison administration.
Elections for May 21 will be held for the House of Representatives and half of the Senate. The three-year term of the House of Representatives is coming to an end since its election in May 2019.
After advising Hurley, Governor-General and Queen Elizabeth’s representative to Australia on election day on Sunday morning, Morrison became the first Australian Prime Minister to serve a full three-year term since John Howard was ousted in 2007. .
