“The order from the Chief Veterinary Officer of Saskatchewan bans the movement and participation of birds in fairs, auctions and agricultural fairs, as well as any other events where birds from many locations gather,” the province said in a statement. The order entered into force immediately and will remain in force until at least May 14, when the situation will be reviewed. “The purpose of this mandate is to temporarily reduce the chance of direct contact between birds from different locations during the period when the risk of HPAI outbreaks is immediate,” the province said in a statement. The HPAI first reported waterfowl in Saskatchewan on April 8, while several other provinces, including Alberta and Ontario, have or are currently experiencing epidemics. “Poultry producers and small flock owners are reminded to follow all necessary biosafety protocols to protect their flocks from disease, keeping wild birds away from poultry flocks and their food and water supply, restricting visitors and monitoring the health of birds. “Owners of small herds are encouraged to keep their birds indoors, if possible, during the migration of wild birds,” the province said. Producers are encouraged to contact their veterinarian immediately if they have concerns about their herds. If HPAI is suspected, producers should also contact the local office of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
