BA.2 particularly affects the Northeast, where concentrations of the virus in sewage are rising alongside reported infections in places such as New York, Washington, DC and Philadelphia. Concerns about BA.2 prompted Philadelphia to reinstate the requirement for indoor masks and U.S. authorities to extend mask orders for airplanes and other modes of transport.
