Mountis said John Wright, an American citizen, was accused of entering the country illegally on March 31 at the Surrey Peach Arch State Park border. The RCMP did not explain how Wright crossed the border, but said in a press release that he “joined a Canadian in a taxi” and police quickly arrested him. Police reportedly seized three loaded pistols and a shotgun. “The outstanding work of locating and deterring an alleged gunman from entering Canada is a testament to the BC RCMP Border Patrol’s commitment to protecting Canadians from transnational criminal threats,” Supt said. Bert Ferreira said in the press release. Mountis said Wright was charged with possession of a limited firearm with ammunition, smuggling and failure to comply with the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. He was remanded in custody pending a bail hearing and the RCMP Federal Office of Serious and Organized Crime continues to investigate the situation. Without giving details of how Wright was arrested, the RCMP said it was using “the latest and most advanced technology” to monitor the border.
