David Smith, 57, was arrested by German police on August 10 last year and is accused of gathering information from the British embassy in Berlin in order to pass it on to a foreign country. One of the nine charges relates to allegations that he passed information to a person he believed was a representative of the Russian state, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said. He was flown from Germany today and is due to appear in Westminster Court on Thursday, the Metropolitan Police said. The alleged offenses were committed between October 2020 and August 2021. Smith, who worked as a security guard at the British Embassy in Berlin, was extradited back to the UK from Germany on April 6 after being arrested by German police last August. Nick Price, Head of Crime and Counter-Terrorism at CPS, said: “David Smith has been charged with nine offenses against the Official Secrets Act. “He is charged with seven counts of gathering information for the purpose of sending it to the Russian authorities, one for attempted communication and one for providing information to a person who he believed was a member of the Russian authorities. “After examining the case and approving the charges, we received an extradition warrant and worked closely with our German counterparts to bring Mr Smith back to the United Kingdom.” Smith was believed to be being monitored by MI5 and was being held in Potsdam on charges of working “for a foreign secret service,” the German prosecutor said at the time. His arrest was the result of a joint investigation by German and British authorities, and investigators searched his home and office, the prosecutor said in a statement.
