The local police Twitter account describes a recent operation in Burnaby with other commercial vehicle enforcement services. Of all the commercial trucks that were immobilized, 67% of them were “found to be unsuitable for the road” and were removed from the road. A total of 70 tickets were issued. According to Const. Kevin Connolly with the Burnaby RCMP Traffic Enforcement Unit – in a February interview with NOW – most of these issues would have been identified if drivers had just completed the required vehicle checks before the trip before they hit the road, Connolly spoke with police in February who inspected 238 vehicles in three days and pulled 131 off the road for a total of 374 violations and 216 defects. Three of the trucks that were shut down were found to have at least one tire that was no longer attached to the rim. “They had fallen completely and they were falling and they were just swaying,” Connolly said. Connolly said one problem is the lack of driver safety information. “Very often, I will find these things wrong and start pointing them out, and all I see is an open-eyed driver who has no idea what I’m talking about,” he said.
