The prosecutor in the case who arrived at the scene told reporters that several containers of flammable substances were discovered inside the car, which will be examined by medical examiners. The accident was under investigation and an autopsy-necropsy will be performed, said the prosecutor, Bogdan Staikou.
In a statement after the incident, the Russian embassy expressed its condolences to the driver’s family.
“We must state with regret that regardless of the driver’s motives,” the statement said. “There is no doubt that he committed this act under the influence of an explosion of anti-Russian hysteria in connection with an organized provocation in the city of Bukha.”
The embassy said no employees were injured.
Russia’s ambassador to Romania, Valery Kuzmin, told a Russian state television channel that the embassy in Bucharest had received “repeated” threats via email, according to the state-run Tass news agency. “The atmosphere that has gradually developed here is very tense,” Kuzmin said.

Prior to Zelenski’s speech, the Speaker of the Romanian House of Representatives, Marcel Ciolakou, said that the “horrific images” that emerged after the withdrawal of Russian troops from Bucha “have overwhelmed and upset us all.”
