The grant is part of the Infrastructure Investment Program in Canada, which provides funding for public infrastructure projects, defined as tangible assets for public use and benefit. The pedestrian and bicycle overpass will provide a crosswalk where cyclists and pedestrians currently have to go to nearby traffic lights on Wale Road and Island Highway. At present, pedestrians and cyclists do not have a direct crossing where the galloping goose connects to either side of the Island Highway. (Photo courtesy of City of Colwood) “I am confident that this bridge will significantly increase the number of cyclists on the West Coast, which will support health and well-being, reduce congestion and help us achieve our climate goals,” said the mayor of Colwood. Rob Martin in a press release. Corey Burger, Capital Bike’s policy and infrastructure president, says this has been supported almost since the trail was built. “It’s been a defense priority for Capital Bike since [Greater Victoria Cycling Coalition] “Before that, more or less since Goose was created in the ’90s,” Burger told CHEK News. “Because then it was recognized as a vacuum and you know, it took a long time to close, but at least it will close now.” Burgery says one of the things that attracts people to cycling in Goose is that it is a network of all ages and abilities, but cycling along the Island Highway is not. “Island Highway and Wale Road is a very large intersection with a lot of accidents and it travels very fast,” Burger said. “So what this overrun does is completely eliminate that risk.” “Well, if you are someone who feels less comfortable driving on the road, or if you say you are driving with children and do not want to get anywhere near the road, this will provide this connection at a very, very busy intersection.” A Colwood news bulletin states that the preliminary design for the project requires the overpass to be 38 meters long and 4.1 meters wide. The total cost of the project is estimated at $ 4.9 million, with the city section being about $ 1.4 million and will come from reserve funding provided by the city for community amenities. This is the largest single federal grant @cityofcolwood has ever received. A big “thank you” to the staff of the city for the important work that made this possible. Another exciting program that supports active @cityofcolwood transfer targets. – Rob Martin (@MayorRobMartin) April 11, 2022 The construction of the overpass is estimated to be completed by or before 2026.
