Speaking to CP24 on Wednesday afternoon, Dr. Peter Jüni, the scientific director of the table, said the latest wastewater data show that the province may have reached the plateau in 100,000 cases of COVID-19 per day.
“We see that he has fallen. Maybe he could have fallen. But it is important that we do not catch up,” Jüni said.
He warned that there was still a possibility that the cases would increase again, especially after the Easter weekend.
“We know we’re slowing down. It ‘s a plateau now, and we’re living on a high plateau? Are we going up again, especially after Easter? It’ s up to us. Or do we start going down? “But in every way it looks much better than it did six, seven days ago,” he said.
Last week, Jüni said the province was likely to see between 100,000 and 120,000 new COVID-19 cases each day. Ontario is currently in the sixth wave of the pandemic, driven by the contagious BA.2 Omicron subtype.
On Wednesday, Ontario reported 13 net new deaths from COVID-19 and 1,332 people hospitalized with the virus.
Jüni noted that the delay could be attributed to many things, including accumulated immunity through vaccination and infection. He estimates that about six million Ontarians have been infected with Omicron since December last year.
He also said that the weather played a factor, noting that mobility data showed that people were more outdoors, where transmission is believed to be lower.
Jüni added that he also heard that more people have taken steps to protect themselves from COVID-19.
“I heard from a lot of colleagues that people were behaving more carefully with more mask, less crowding, etc.,” he said.
In anticipation of the big weekend, Jüni urged those celebrating Easter to do it outdoors, weather permitting.
“It will help a lot,” he said. “Go to parks and enjoy an early barbecue. Much better than indoors.”
“So I’m happy for this plateau, but I would be even more excited if we were all a little more careful for a few more weeks,” he added.
The scientific table is expected to release the new modeling COVID-19 on Thursday at 13:00
