Quebec opposition parties plan to disrupt the province’s legislature, government leader Simon Jolin-Barette accused on Wednesday. Quebec health critic Vincent Marissal has denied the allegations. “There is no dark plot going on,” he said, noting that the government was spreading “all sorts of false, vague rumors of conspiracy theories that the opposition is working silently to create a systematic blockade of the proposed legislation.” Read our full story. 2:50 p.m.

Quebec cancels some hospital procedures amid sharp increase in hospitalization
Quebec is forced to cancel some hospital procedures as the county health system faces a crash of COVID-positive patients. At the highest level of the last two months the hospitalizations. More than 2,000 Quebec hospital beds are currently occupied by people with COVID-19, from less than 1,600 a week ago. Dr. Luc Boileau, the county’s interim director of public health, confirmed in a press conference today that clinical services are being reduced in some cases. However, he said there was no general order to cut off services across the province. Daniel Paré, the deputy health minister, told reporters that hospitals were “managing the situation according to their epidemiological situation”.

He said the health network was “learning to work” around the increase in hospitalization, which comes at a time when nearly 13,000 health workers are absent due to COVID. Earlier today, the Institut National d ‘Excellence en santé et en services sociaux (INESSS) warned that the increase in hospitalization that began about three weeks ago is expected to accelerate in the next two weeks. (See the following item, with a time mark of 11:40 a.m.) The increase in hospitalization is compounded by the fact that some Quebec residents are beginning to catch the flu, officials told reporters. The flu season is just beginning in Quebec. Normally, the season starts in the fall and is over. About 45 percent of COVID-19 patients are hospitalized for the virus, with the rest being treated for other reasons, such as breaking a leg or giving birth, Boileau said.

But Boileau noted that even people who are hospitalized for other reasons should be isolated to protect other patients as well as health care workers. And some of those who are hospitalized for other reasons develop severe COVID during their hospitalization. “It is never easy to have COVID,” he added. Boileau said “overall, the situation remains worrying” in Quebec. “The pandemic is not behind us,” he said. “It is active at the moment and will continue to be for a few weeks.” He said experts estimate that Quebec handles between 40,000 and 60,000 cases daily. Boileau said: “We hope that the increase in cases and the impact on hospitals will start to stabilize and then start to decrease.” Stay tuned for Easter rallies: Boileau

Boileau urged Quebec residents to be wary of Easter rallies this weekend, especially those aged 60 and over, as they are at the highest risk of serious outcomes from COVID. Christians celebrate Easter this weekend. The Jewish holiday of Passover begins on Friday. Muslims gather for Ramadan this month. Boileau noted that people with COVID symptoms can be contagious for up to 10 days. He said that for many people COVID now starts with a sore throat, “not a big fever or loss of smell”, as he did with previous COVID executives. Boileau urged people not to meet people with symptoms, even if they did not come out positive. “We have to stay vigilant,” he said. Boileau said he would not suggest the maximum number of people that could be met.

“Everyone must take responsibility for protecting themselves and others.” He added that the fact that people have been vaccinated, even with four doses, does not mean that they can not be infected. “The vaccine is very good at preventing serious infections, but you can still get infected and be contagious,” Boileau added. Vaccinations increase as 60+ get the fourth shot Paré, the co-ordinator of the Quebec vaccination campaign, told a news conference that many people aged 60 and over are jumping on the county offer for a fourth dose (also known as a second booster). He said about 17,000 residents of long-term care homes (CHSLDs) have received their fourth installment. Novavax arrives in Quebec Paré announced that Quebec was starting doses of a new type of vaccine – Novavax.

More than 6,000 installments have been delivered and distributed throughout the province. Quebec expects a total of more than 220,000 doses in the coming weeks. In February, Novavax became the first protein-based vaccine approved by Health Canada. Some experts hope it will attract some unvaccinated Canadians who are reluctant to get mRNA vaccines. Only a few vaccine clinics offer Novavax, which is only available to people 18 and older, Paré said. Appointments will be available from Friday 15 April Those interested should make an appointment by phone. In Montreal, the number you need to call is 514-644-4545. Quebec residents can visit the provincial government website for the first vaccine doses for availability information in various areas.

US extends transit mask mandate until May 3 amid COVID blast
From the Reuters news agency: President Joe Biden’s government plans to extend by 15 days the U.S. mandate requiring travelers to wear masks on planes, trains and transit junctions, three sources told Reuters. Industrial groups and Republican lawmakers want the government to end the 14-month mask mandate immediately. The latest extension will maintain the requirements, which were set to expire on April 18, until May 3, amid an increase in COVID-19 cases. The official announcement is expected later on Wednesday. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) first issued a public health mandate requiring masks at interstate and transit junctions, including airplanes, public transportation, taxis, utility vehicles, and trains, to take effect in February. 2021.
