Data from the Ottawa COVID-19 Sewage Monitoring Project show that the seven-day moving average viral signal has declined slightly, although it remains at an almost record high.
The viral signal of COVID-19 wastewater in Ottawa from April 12, 2022.
With continuing restrictions on PCR testing in Ontario, local reading of the viral signal in sewage has become a closely monitored indicator of COVID-19 levels in the community, and recent data suggest that the virus is more prevalent than ever.
Ottawa’s new wastewater numbers are in line with provincial data, which show that COVID-19 levels in wastewater appear to have peaked.
“Sewage monitoring seems to indicate that we have reached the peak,” Health Minister Christine Eliot said on Friday.
Hospital admissions in Ottawa rose on Thursday to 18 patients with COVID-19 from 15. Two people are in the ICU, compared to one. No new deaths were reported.
OPH hospital records represent only Ottawa residents receiving active COVID-19 cases. Local hospitals report higher numbers, including patients admitted for reasons other than COVID-19 but found positive and non-Ottawa patients.
The following is a look at the number of COVID-19 patients in each hospital:

Ottawa Hospital: 53 patients Queensway Carleton Hospital: 12 patients Montfort Hospital: 10 patients CHEO: Five patients

OPH reported 287 new laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases on Thursday. Daily case studies underestimate the true level of COVID-19 in the community, as PCR testing in Ontario remains limited in some high-risk populations.
There are two new cases in long-term care homes, nursing homes, hospitals or other complexes in the city, bringing the total to 46.
The Ottawa Health Officer, Dr. Vera Ets issued a special statement on Wednesday, urging residents to hold small rallies this Easter weekend.
Ontario health officials reported 23 new deaths from the virus on Thursday as hospitals continued to grow.
