A spokesman for the club said in a statement: “We are aware of an alleged incident after today’s match in Everton and the club will co-operate with any police investigation.” And on Saturday night, Ronaldo posted a statement on his personal Instagram account to apologize. He also called on the fan involved to watch a match at Old Trafford “as a sign of fair play and sport”. “It is never easy to face emotions in difficult times like the one we are facing,” he wrote on Instagram. “Nevertheless, we must always have respect, patience and set an example for all young people who love beautiful play. “I would like to apologize for my outburst and, if possible, I would like to invite this fan to watch a game at Old Trafford as a sign of good fighting and athleticism.” Ronaldo had returned to the United starting line-up and played the entire 90 minutes of defeat. Anthony Gordon’s shot judged the game in Goodison, possibly condemning United to a season without Champions League football. The club is now six points away from Tottenham, which has increased its chances of finishing fourth in the Premier League by beating Aston Villa. United goalkeeper David de Gea called his side’s appearance “shameful” after the game and coach Ralph Rangnick agreed, but Ronaldo was the front-runner for the off-field incident. The legendary scorer had already left the field limping after the final whistle, with an unpleasant wound in his tibia that was recorded by the cameras. He seemed to be in pain as he entered the Goodison tunnel to head to the dressing room when a fight broke out with a supporter.
