(File photo. Leo Crockwell in court, February 2013.) Leo Crockwell continues to stick his nose in the law, delaying his own possible release from prison. Crockwell is facing serious charges for assaulting two RCMP officers last Friday night in Whittles Bay. He has been in custody ever since, displaying the same distrust and contempt for the law for which he is famous. This goes back to the Bay Bulls standoff in 2010 when he kept the Mounties at bay for 8 days before giving them the slip but was later arrested by the RNC. Now 67, Crockwell is clearly upset to be back in prison, but is also doing nothing to help secure his release. He refused to undergo a psychiatric evaluation and will not leave his cell for a bail hearing. Instead, his appearances so far are by phone from the city lockup. Yesterday, Judge James Walsh offered Crockwell options to seek release, but this was met with outcries about Charter rights and he claimed it would be held in a “lower court”. That court will try again this afternoon to get Crockwell out of his cell for a bail hearing.
