Rogan Ward / Reuters Heavy rains and floods have hit the east coast of South Africa, killing hundreds of people, damaging homes and destroying roads. The floods hit the province of KwaZulu-Natal, which includes the coastal city of Durban. The roads cracked and gave way to deep cracks. A huge stack of ship containers collapsed in muddy waters. A bridge was swept away, leaving people stranded on both sides. Extreme levels of rainfall have been falling in KwaZulu-Natal since Monday. In a statement posted on Facebook, the provincial government described it as “one of the worst weather storms in the history of our country.” Teams are working to evacuate areas that have suffered “mud landslides, floods and structural collapses of buildings and roads,” Sipho Hlomuka, a member of the KwaZulu-Natal Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Executive Board, said on Twitter.
