The problems of buckling railway tracks, sagging overhead lines and melting road asphalt will recur for many, many years to come, Grant Shapps said in a somber message to the public. The transport minister agreed the government had been given advance warning of the current heatwave – but argued it would take “decades to build and replace” the infrastructure affected.
