Power was restored for many before noon, with the last 6,238 customers seeing their power restored shortly after noon. FortisBC officials told Castanet News they have not identified the exact cause for the outage. Some traffic lights may need to be reset and could be affected. UPDATE 11:55 AM Power has been restored to most FortisBC customers in the City of Kelowna. Only 6,238 customers remain without power. These customers are located in the downtown area south of Bernard Avenue, extending south to KLO Road. At the peak of the outage, more than 30,000 customers across the city were without power. Power went out at 11:24 this morning and was restored for most within half an hour. Cause according to the FortisBC website is a transmission outage. UPDATE 11:50 AM Power is starting to return to much of Kelowna north of Highway 97. Some areas of North Glenmore, Rutland, downtown south of KLO and the McCurdy/Leathead areas remain without power. The latest figures now include most of the city centre, a larger part of Rutland and the South Pandosy and Lower Mission areas. There is some good news for people in the far north. Power has been restored for some customers. ORIGINAL 11:35 AM Power is out in much of Kelowna. According to the Fortis BC website, more than 18,400 customers are without power. The outage affects most of Glenmore, a large part of Rutland and extends south through a large area of the central part of the city, parts of the north end, downtown and upper and lower mission. A portion of the outage extends south to Oliver. The power went out just before 11:30 this morning. There is no information yet on the reasons for the outage. UPDATE 1:07 p.m FortisBC tells Castanet that this morning’s power outage, which impacted more than 30,000 customers, was caused by a scheduled job that knocked out power. “We did some scheduled work and that scheduled work caused a momentary trip, but apparently our crews were able to restore service within 35 minutes, which is very impressive,” says Jas Baweja, FortisBC spokesperson.
