The Torres MP had just spoken for a minute at the Courtyard Hotel in Finnieston before being called for a moment by veteran fighter Sean Clerkin.
The Conservative leader had just described Labor and the SNP as the “terrible twins” of Scottish politics when Clerkin suddenly shouted “three Ross jobs” and began a detail of welfare cuts. Clerkin told the room: “1.3 million people will be driven into poverty because of the rising cost of living – all because of the criminal leaders in Westminster, Johnson and Sunak. “They should be forced to resign because of PartyGate – because at the end of the day people died and people could not get close before the end.” Ross patiently let Clerkin say his part before Tory’s assistants led the fighter out of the room. Speaking outside the hotel on the Record, Clerkin defended his decision to stop the Conservatives. “I was representing the Scottish Tenants’ Organization and our members are being forced into poverty,” he said. “The conclusion is that some of our members have told us in recent days that they are starving and catching a cold. “That’s why I felt the need to do what I did today – to draw attention to the fact that people are suffering now.” Clerkin has a long history of disrupting political campaigning in Scotland. He was arrested in 2020 after a scam at Edinburgh airport that saw him unfurl a banner reading “England has left Scotland” – but the case was later dropped. In 2011, Clerkin made headlines when he forced former Scottish Labor leader Iain Gray to head to a Subway sandwich shop in downtown Glasgow ahead of that year’s Holyrood election.
