The Creatures and Realms of Dungeons & Dragons

This dragon breathes what appears to be black acid as opposed to fire. This could indicate that he is an extremely powerful, chaotic evil Ancient Black Dragon, who uses an acid breath attack. This appears to be the Underdark, an underground realm. A quick shot of a Mimic, an infamous D&D creature that masquerades as a treasure chest. Two famous D&D monsters in one shot! Both a Displacer Beast and a Gelatinous Cube can be seen here. Although it is difficult to make out the exact color of this dragon due to the volcanic setting and fire breath, it is likely a Red Dragon, known as ferocious tyrants.

The Spells of Dungeons & Dragons

The mage appears to be using some sort of protective spell — possibly Force Barrier — to shield the incoming arrows. Looks like someone may have used the Heat Metal spell on Michelle Rodriguez’s ax. It looks like Sophia Lillis’ character could be using the Dimension Door spell here. The wizard casts some sort of spell, which could be Witch Bolt, based on the shape. Based on the sounds here, the mage might be using Magic Missile. The other wizard teleports through a spell — could it be Misty Step?

The Character of Sophia Lillis

Most of the characters appear to be human, but based on her horns, Sophia Lillis’ character is most likely a Tiefling. This shows Lillis’ character transforming from a horse into the much more powerful beast, Owlbear. However, it’s worth noting that the Wild Shape ability—the class trait that allows druids to transform into animals—wouldn’t allow the transformation into Owlbear, as it technically qualifies as a monster. This could mean that the directors are playing around with the combat rules a bit, or that a spellcaster just cast Polymorph on her. The trailer was released shortly after fans got a first look at its main characters in costume. Check out everything else announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2022 as the show continues.
