We saw an opportunity not only to design a new shape but also to create new experiences that were never possible with a smartphone before. Overcoming many technological hurdles, we successfully introduced the first foldable smartphone in 2019 and have since changed the future of our industry. Last year, we saw nearly 10 million foldable smartphones shipped worldwide. This is an industry growth of over 300% since 2020 and I predict that this rapid growth will continue.[1] We are reaching the moment where these foldable devices are becoming widespread and staking a bigger claim on the overall smartphone market. Most importantly, Samsung Galaxy foldables have changed the way we use mobile devices and helped create a better lifestyle for users around the world.
As lifestyles evolve, a new legacy unfolds
The world is more connected than ever and moves at a much faster pace. Work and play are blending and the lines between the physical and digital worlds have blurred. Where we turn for work, entertainment, wellness and more has become one place – our phone. Therefore, our users need a versatile device to meet their daily demands. The Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip fulfill this mandate. Last year, 70% of foldable Galaxy users[2] turned to Galaxy Z Flip3 5G to help them see the world from a different perspective. Z Flip3 users love having a device built for self-expression, whether they’re choosing bold color options for their device or taking photos in a new way with Flex mode[3]. It’s a different experience with the Galaxy Z Fold3 5G. Nearly one in three Galaxy foldable users opted for this ultimate productivity device last year[4], which has enabled them to do more through hyper-connected, personal computers. Fold users love the multitasking ability of a screen that doubles in size so they can be more efficient and get things done faster. Both folding users have enthusiastically embraced what we created. Their response is our biggest motivation to move forward, and that’s why we’re committed to this journey of finding new possibilities for mobile innovation. This year, we’ve gone into every detail and opened up the new experiences enabled by these behavior-changing devices. I’m excited to see people discover new ways to do more of the things they love with the new foldable. Of course, this would not be possible without open cooperation and a shared desire with our partners to constantly bring new innovations to the mobile category. We’re working with industry leaders, including Google, Microsoft and other carrier partners, to expand the experiences possible across the foldable ecosystem.
Redefining what’s possible for people everywhere
Three years ago, Galaxy foldables could be summed up in a single word: radical. Very quickly, however, it became clear that this innovative, flexible design is perfectly suited to modern lifestyles. As a result, what was once a novelty three years ago is now the preferred choice for millions. In the upcoming Unpacked on August 10, you’ll see that the impact of our innovation isn’t just about what technology can do. It’s about what you can do. We were once again inspired by the most important source – Galaxy users – to push the boundaries of what’s possible. I look forward to showing you the potential of the new Samsung Galaxy foldable devices as the ultimate tool for both productivity and self-expression. Now, you can do more than you ever thought possible, all at once, on one device. Get ready to unfold your world. — [1] International Data Corporation (IDC) noted that global shipments of foldable phones, including foldables and foldable form factors, will total 7.1 million units in 2021. This represents a 264.3% increase over the 1.9 million units shipped in 2020. [2] According to Strategy Analytics 2020. [3] Flex mode is supported at angles between 75° and 115°. For your convenience, it can be difficult to maintain Flex mode while moving due to shaking or other movement. It is recommended to keep the phone still while in Flex mode. Some apps may not support Flex mode. [4] Based on percentage of domestic sales.
