The 50-year-old has been Ten Hague’s number two since the beginning of this season, having previously led Ajax’s reserve team in the Dutch second division. As a player, he represented the Dutch Under-21 team and also spent time in Scotland’s top division with Motherwell. Ten Hague is set to take over the reins of the 2022-23 season, with Ralph Rangnik finishing his term and taking on the role of adviser. And while he reportedly wants to bring Van der Gaag with him, the former Utrecht coach is also in talks with former United assistant Steve McClaren. Eric ten Hague’s five-year plan after agreeing to become the new Manchester United manager Why Manchester United chose Eric ten Hague instead of Mauricio Pochettino as reasons for disapproval According to The Athletic, there was no contact between United and McClaren, despite the fact that the Englishman spoke with Ten Hague. McClaren was Sir Alex Ferguson ‘s assistant when United won the Champions League in 1999 and spent two seasons in the Netherlands coaching FC Twente. McClaren’s last coach was at Queen’s Park Rangers in the 2018-19 season. Most recently, however, he has partnered with Derby County, which is run by former United star Wayne Rooney. The former Middlesbrough boss also spent time as Sven-Goran Eriksson’s number two when the Swede was England manager. He was in the big tournaments in 2002, 2004 and 2006 and succeeded Erickson as manager before being sacked when England failed to qualify for Euro 2008. Ajax face PSV Eindhoven in the final and could end the season with a home double if they win on Sunday and maintain a small lead over Roger Schmidt’s team in the league. Former PSV and Netherlands star Ibrahim Afellay told Ten Hag that there is no “better time” to join United, with the Red Devils likely to lose Champions League football. Ranknik’s side are six points adrift of the top four in the Premier League, with just seven league games left, and were sent off in Europe by Atletico Madrid in March. “I would definitely go if he could bend it at will,” Afellay told Studio Voetbal (via the Manchester Evening News). “If you want to believe the reports, it has certain requirements and that’s only good. There is no better time to go in.” read more Manchester United bookings for summer transfers are justified as Roy Keane warning remains read more 5 possible next clubs for Mauricio Pochettino after Man Utd snubs former Tottenham manager
