Gaurav Vasdev told Global News that his cousin, Kartik Vasudev, was shot and killed at the Sherbourne subway station in Toronto on Thursday. According to Vasdev, his cousin was a first-year marketing student studying at Seneca College.

“We always thought Canada was such a safe country that nothing could happen in Kartik there,” Vasdev said. “It’s just unbelievable what happened and you know, like I said, we don’t even know what to do right now. ” Vasdev said Vasudev’s father is now working to secure an emergency visa to travel to Canada to find answers to what happened to his son and transport his body back to India. “How can we be well?” he said. “This terrible thing happened to us.” He said the family spoke to Vasudev “just an hour or two before the shooting happened”. “It was at 3 p.m. “Toronto and he had said he would go to work,” he said. “He was very normal and very happy about it.” In an email to Global News, Seneca College said the school community “is saddened to hear of Vasudev’s tragic death.” The story goes on under the ad “Our thoughts are with Mr Vasudev’s family, friends and classmates,” the statement said. “Counseling is available to students and staff.” In a tweet, the Consulate General of India in Toronto said it was “shocked and saddened by the unfortunate murder of Indian student Kartik Vasudev in a shooting incident in Toronto yesterday.” “We are in contact with the family and will provide all possible assistance for the timely repatriation of the bodies,” the tweet reads.

According to police, the shooting took place shortly after 5pm on Thursday, outside the metro station. Speaking at a news conference Thursday, Toronto police said. Richard Harris said that before police arrived at the scene, an off-duty ambulance that happened to be in the area delivered first aid to the victim. Harris said Vasudev had suffered “multiple gunshot wounds” and was taken to hospital in critical condition where he was later pronounced dead. Harris said police are looking for a suspect who is described as a five-foot-six-inch or five-seven-inch-tall man of average physique. He was last seen running away from the stage heading south on Glen Street. The story goes on under the ad Harris said he was seen holding a pistol. Harris said officers conducted an “extended” canvas in the area on Thursday and will review the Toronto Transit Committee’s monitoring material. The Toronto Murder Police Unit is investigating.
