Rob Gibson Emergency crews had to respond quickly after a fire broke out near Kelowna’s designated Weddell Place homeless encampment Tuesday morning. RCMP and the Kelowna Fire Department responded and found the fire fully contained shortly before 9 a.m. Tuesday. Video from the scene shows thick black smoke billowing from an area along the railroad track. Another eyewitness called Castanet to let us know he saw the fire break out. “ Kelowna Fire Department Captain Shayne Kiehlbauch tells Castanet when the fire department arrived the cart was fully engulfed in flames. “There was a report of a fire in the area. I could see the plume of black smoke,” says Kiehlbauch. Information from the scene indicates that the fire was someone’s belongings in a shopping cart that went up in flames. “I’m not sure what items were in there. But it was all in there and it’s kind of fused together in one big clump,” says Kiehlbauch. Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire and there were no injuries.
