Sault Ste. Marie native was accepted to Western and studied health sciences for three years before being admitted to the Ivey School of Business, where she was in her first year. But Nenonen’s life ended tragically on Monday when she was hit by a vehicle outside a student rental building near campus. “On behalf of the entire western community, I extend my deepest condolences to Maija’s family as well as to her friends, classmates and everyone who has known her. “While I know words can offer little consolation in a time of deep sadness, we mourn their loss,” Western President Alan Shepard said in a statement on Tuesday. Nenonen is remembered as a strong member of the western community who gave her time to support others, she said.

“She was very proud to be a Western Mustang,” Shepard said. “This is a difficult time for many in our campus community. “We are here for those students and staff who need support,” he said. Back at the scene of the fatal crash, a stream of visibly upset Western University students – some crying, others carrying flowers – could be seen entering a unit on the complex at 974 Western Rd. Emergency services were called on Monday around 1:15 p.m. at the compound where a woman died on the spot after being hit by a vehicle, police said. Residents and visitors described the frantic aftermath of the fatal accident, the second death of a pedestrian in London this year. Student Cristina Pietrantonio, 35, was at her sister’s house playing the piano when a roommate said police were in the parking lot.

“I ran outside and looked and there were several policemen. “There was an ambulance that ran to the truck that had a trailer,” he said. “I think at that point we heard some people shouting.” Kierra Holowachuk, a resident of the band, said she was writing an online test when she heard screams from the parking lot. “I remember hearing a girl screaming like a man,” said Holowachuk, a third-year student. “I was quite scared.” Flowers have been placed in front of an apartment building at 974 Western Rd. where Western University student Maija Nenonen was hit and killed by a vehicle in the parking lot on Monday. The photo was taken on Tuesday, April 12, 2022. Mike Hensen / The London Free Press Police film excluded the truck loaded with courtyard litter and a trailer, and a body covered with canvas was next to the driver’s open door. Pietrantonio said she saw a man in the truck talking to police. “He seemed upset,” he said. Police said the driver remained at the scene and the traffic management unit is investigating the accident.

A police spokesman said there was no new information to be released on Tuesday. Pietrantonio has been looking at her shots from the dashboard camera since she arrived at her sister’s band around 12:45 p.m. “He was not there when I got there,” he said of the truck at the center of the investigation. Calls to the truck-related landscaping company went unanswered on Tuesday. The three-storey complex is owned by London Housing Corp. The company did not respond to a request for comment. Pietrandoni, who watched a trailer remove the truck and the trailer, was shaken by the deadly collision. “The whole thing is tragic. . . “It just makes me sick,” he said.
