Vowell told police Vining started the shooting game after producing a firearm and a bulletproof vest, asking if “they had ever seen anyone being shot with a bulletproof vest,” officials said.
Investigators found that Vowell’s statement was true after Whitmer initially misled police, saying “as soon as my house was shot, my friend was shot in the chest,” according to affidavits before calling police. In a later statement, Whitler said Vowell shot Broad Jr., but the evidence did not support that claim, police said.
