Brown died Sunday at the age of 52 in Williamsport, Pa. He has been in hospital for the past few weeks and has had significant health problems since leaving the Cowboys after the 2019 season. On Sunday night, Cowboys / GM owner Jerry Jones issued a statement: “Gary Brown had a big heart with a big smile and a great personality. His energy and spirit were contagious. He lit up every room he entered and touched the lives of those who knew him in such a positive way. Everyone who knew him loved him. He means so much to the players he coached and the coaches he coached in. His love for family, football and life was evident every day. He kept playing and never gave up. My family and Dallas The Cowboys are broken and our love and support is with his wife, Kim, his daughters, Malena and Dorianna, and his son, Tre. “ Brown was currently the second coach at the University of Wisconsin, but was recently reassigned due to health problems. Brown, a former star running back to Penn State, played eight seasons in the NFL. Selected for the eighth round of the Oilers in 1991, Brown played five years in Houston before ending his career with the Chargers and the Giants. Brown joined the Cowboys in 2013 as his running back coach. His arrival gave a direct boost to DeMarco Murray, who made the Pro Bowl in 2013 before a record-breaking season in 2014 that set a NFL record of 1,845 yards. Murray was named the NFL Forward of the Year before signing with the Eagles at the following free agency. Brown was able to lead Darren McFadden to nearly 1,100 yards in 2015. After that, the Cowboys drafted Ezekiel Eliot, who made the Pro Bowl three of his four years under Brown, only lost in 2017 when he was sent off for six races. Following the replacement of Jason Garrett as manager in 2020, the Cowboys also passed Brown. He eventually joined Wisconsin and coached the Badgers throughout 2021, but health problems forced him to miss the Las Vegas Bowl in December. Brown’s death is the latest tragic news for the Cowboys family in the last month. Jerry Jones’s longtime aide, Marilyn Love, died in March at the age of 80, and then Hall of Fame’s attacking tackle, Rayfield Wright, died just last week.
