When asked about the news that he would not be detained, Vogel replied. “I was not told s — and I will enjoy tonight’s game,” Vogel told reporters. “We will deal with tomorrow.” In fact, the Lakers found it difficult to commit to Vogel even when they hired him. They had originally planned to hire Tai Lou, but when they only offered him a three-year contract and demanded control of his coaching staff, he turned down the offer and the Lakers turned to Vogel. He accepted the smallest contract and returned it to all parties involved. However, even after Vogel won a championship, he had to wait after the 2020-21 season to win a contract extension. This extension reportedly only added one year to his contract, with him only for a total of four, despite the fact that Lou received a five-year contract from the Clippers before he even coached a game for them. Vogel’s strength as a coach has always been his defensive prowess. The Lakers won the 2020 championship based on their defense and last season occupied No. 1 in the league despite the injuries of both LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Vogel was also unable to save the Lakers’ roster this season, however, as they fell to No. 21 in defense. A couple that is reduced by the often confusing decisions of Vogel and the Lakers decided to leave their troubled coach. Vogel should now become one of the most sought after coaches in the market. In three NBA stops he won a league title, reached the conference finals three times and won just under 53 percent of his regular season games. If he fails to win another coaching job this off-season, he could either take a one-year leave (as he did after being sacked by the Orlando Magic in 2018) or take up the position of assistant coach. Vogel was a rumored candidate for Lou’s staff if Lou had been hired by the Lakers in 2019. The Lakers, meanwhile, will now be looking for their sixth full-time manager since Phil Jackson retired in 2011. None of them have been as successful as Vogel. Traditionally, teams almost never fire coaches so soon after a league. But the Lakers are not a traditional organization. They demand excellence every year. They have made it clear that any coach who fails to meet this standard will be left without a job. Now, they have gone through the only coach other than Jackson who has led them to a league in the last three decades.
