The ordeal began around 7 a.m. Wednesday as patrol officers heard gunshots along Arrott and Leiper streets. They found an unknown man holding a gun and chased him to an apartment building along 4700 Block Leiper Street, police said. The gunman then entered the building. Around the same time, police found a 57-year-old and a 42-year-old on Arrott and Griscom streets. Both women had been shot in the hip. Both were taken to hospital in stable condition. Philadelphia Police, SEPTA Police and SWAT surrounded the gunman inside the apartment building. SkyForce10 was on the scene as the gunman shot at police officers who returned fire. During the confrontation, a SEPTA officer was shot in the abdomen at least once. He was taken to Temple University Hospital where he is being treated in critical but stable condition. Shortly after 8 pm, police officers entered the apartment building and found the gunman dead on the second floor. They also found his weapon. Police believe the man died from a gunshot wound he caused. They have not yet revealed his identity. This story is unfolding. Check again for updates.
