Authorities said the attack took place early Sunday morning outside the New Westminster SkyTrain station and appeared to be accidental. “What is deeply troubling to us is that this seems like an unprovoked attack. There is no known relationship between the suspect and the victim,” Staff Sgt. New Westminster Police Department Jeff Scott said Tuesday. The victim suffered serious head injuries, but police said they were not in danger of death. Witnesses who called 911 to report the attack said the perpetrator used an ax and robbed the victim’s bag before leaving the scene. Scott said police were able to locate and arrest a 30-year-old suspect shortly after the incident. Burnaby’s Abdulkadir Hassan has since been charged with aggravated assault and robbery. Investigators are still trying to piece together what led to the attack, and Scott urged anyone with information to contact New Westminster Police. “We understand that as this attack took place, many people were leaving the area,” Scott said. “We would like to talk to them.”
