Russian troops, who had stopped their advance on Kyiv by Ukrainian forces, had captured Bucha days earlier. Telling locals they were worried someone had reported their positions to the Ukrainian army, Russian soldiers ordered people to stay away from the road, which runs parallel to the Bucha River at the southern end of the city.
