From April 3 to 9, 177 people were admitted to hospital with COVID-19. This is an increase of 36, or 25.5 percent, from the 141 hospital admissions reported last week. The province also reported a jump in admissions to the intensive care unit – 19 last week compared to 11 last week. The latest update says five more people died from COVID-19 last week, bringing the number of publicly reported deaths in Manitoba to 1,759. On Monday, CBC News published leaked data that referred to an internal database of the province. These figures indicate that an additional five people died from the coronavirus from 9 to 11 April, bringing the total to 1,764. Laboratory tests confirmed 1,694 new cases of the disease, 335 more than the 1,359 reported last week, an increase of 25%. These numbers are considered underestimated, however, due to the limited access to polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests, the only type of test officially recorded by the province. The province does not monitor positive rapid test results. There were 829 confirmed cases in Winnipeg Health, 265 in Prairie Mountain Health, 252 in Interlake-Eastern, 215 in Southern Health and 133 in Northern Health. The province’s test-taking rate also rose from 18.6 percent to 20.7 percent. The labs completed an average of 1,166 tests a day last week. Last week a new case was reported in a long-term care unit, compared to seven in the previous week.
