The heat wave started in Spain on July 10 and temperatures have reached record levels for the month in many parts of the country. According to calculations by the Carlos III Health Institute, the heat could have already killed 510 people. Sweltering temperatures claimed 150 lives on Saturday alone, according to estimates based on excess deaths compared to the season’s average. The heat has particularly affected people who work outdoors. On Saturday, a street worker in Madrid collapsed from heatstroke and later died in hospital, prompting the mayor’s office to increase working hours for public sector workers.
