Moscow has denied that it targeted civilians in Ukraine, calling the images of the dead in Bucharest a shocking “monstrous forgery” organized by the West to discredit it.
“Recent reports of civilian killings in Bhutan are deeply worrying,” said Tirumurti, India’s permanent representative to the United Nations, at a Security Council meeting.
“We unequivocally condemn these killings and support the call for an independent inquiry.”
Tirumurti made the remarks shortly after US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken had a telephone conversation with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmaniam Jaisankar. The United States has repeatedly urged India to condemn Russia’s aggression since the February 24 invasion.
India relies heavily on Russia for military equipment. New Delhi has repeatedly called for an end to the violence in Ukraine, but has abstained from various UN war resolutions in a difficult effort to balance its ties with Moscow and the West.
India, currently a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, hosted the Russian Foreign Minister in New Delhi last week, during which they discussed maintaining trade ties.
