The DNC voted in favor of a bill that would no longer guarantee Iowa at the front of the presidential calendar, now forcing Iowa Democrats to have to argue about why they should return to the top spot.
The bill removes Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina from an early voting window and requires all states to apply for a new waiver if they want this early window status. The proposal will be addressed to states that can promote “diversity and a fair process”.
The committee members were critical of Iowa’s parliamentary committee system before the vote. The Democratic Party of Iowa was criticized in 2020, when the party could not declare a winner amid intense concerns about the accuracy of its results. There have been concerns in recent years about justice and transparency, as parliamentary groups use a system of awarding equivalent representatives of states to determine the winner instead of using a simple vote count.
The Democratic Party of Iowa will now have until May 6 to submit a letter of intent to apply in the early voting window.
They have until June 3 to submit a completed application.
