In a video posted on the Vancouver Park Board’s Twitter account, Peter Fox, the city’s director of leisure services, said significant damage was found a few weeks ago after a full inspection of the outdoor pool on the west side of the city.
“This storm was like nothing we’ve ever experienced before,” Fox said.
Last night, we shared the disappointing news that Kits Pool may not reopen this summer due to significant damage it suffered during the January 7th storm. To fully inspect the pool, staff had to wait for the tides / groundwater to subside, which could only be done a few weeks ago.1 / 2 pic.twitter .com / Efu7anPV8J

A “royal tide” along with a storm surge and strong westerly winds on January 7 led to extensive damage to the sea wall and Jericho pier.
Vancouver Park Board’s entertainment director Steve Kellock told CBC’s On The Coast that the storm saw water rising to the seabed and pool. At one point, the Kitsilano Showboat community tent was surrounded by water.

A storm in January, which caused significant damage to the sea wall and other parts of Vancouver, also hit the outdoor pool in Chicago. Now, the pool may not be ready to open this spring. Vancouver Park Board’s entertainment director Steve Kellock explains. 7:03
“[It] “It looked like an island in the center of the sea water there because of how high the water rose,” he said.
Staff had to wait for the tides and groundwater levels to recede before inspecting the pool.

“We are now able to see the effects of this storm damage that date back to January and, unfortunately, the damage is extensive,” Kellock said, adding that cracks were found in the bottom of the pool tank.
Kellock said it’s too early to put in a dollar amount for repairs as it will take engineers about six to eight weeks to make a full assessment.
To offset the closure of Kits Pool, the park board plans to extend the hours and add lifeguards to the pools at Second Beach and New Brighton Park.
