A resident of the Fischer brothel plagued by violence in the 1990s, Faggin was friendly and quick to laugh, according to a longtime friend. He asked not to be named because he was afraid of retaliation. While staying at the scene of Faggin’s murder, another woman was shot and killed two miles away on Cobblestone Lane Block 2200, near the troubled Oakmont apartment complex. Their deaths began on the bloodiest New Orleans weekend in a decade. By sunrise Monday, 18 people will be shot, six deadly. A 14-year-old was among the injured. New Orleans police did not make any arrests in any of the 15 shootings until late Monday. BY DAN SWANSON Graphics Editor The violence focused on Algiers, where four of the six homicides took place. In addition to the two killings on Friday, Algiers saw gunfire at 8:13 p.m. on Friday at 800 Lamarque Street, which sent a man to hospital. His condition was not immediately available. Saturday brought two more homicides to the West Bank. At around 4 a.m., a man was shot dead at 3700 Herschel Street. Eight hours later, another man was shot and killed in Westbend Parkway block 2200, also near the Oakmont apartment complex. These “pointless” killings have caused unrest in the community, said Leslie Ellison, a former member of the Orleans Parish School Council who serves on the Algiers Neighborhood Council of Presidents and is a lifelong resident of the area. “It’s like an experience in a war zone,” Ellison said. “It’s catastrophic. It hurts families on both sides. “Whether you are on the side of the victim or on the side of the perpetrator – it hurts both sides.” Ellison knows some of the victims’ families. Because of the tight-knit nature of the community, victims and suspects often worship and study side by side in church and at school, he said. “Sometimes family members know the suspect who killed their family members, so it’s revenge, street revenge,” Ellison said. “It’s a circle. With prayer, this circle will be broken. “ There is no indication that any of the shootings in Algiers are linked, but they all remain under investigation, NOPD spokesman Aaron Looney said Monday. The shooting was reported by police over a 72-hour period from 7 a.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Monday. In all, there were 15 shooting-related service calls during the period, which equates to most shooting incidents in the last 10 years, according to an analysis of the NOPD call log. The other periods with the most traffic were April 2021 and May 2021. Looney acknowledged that there was a “high volume” of calls over the weekend, but declined to comment on what could have caused the violence. “We are actively investigating these shootings and we are working very hard to find those responsible and bring them to justice,” he said.
