The last of the committee’s hearings on January 6 ended after nearly three hours, focusing on Donald Trump’s refusal to withdraw the mob of supporters who violently attacked Congress. Along with detailing Mr. Trump’s inaction during the attack on Congress, the committee reviewed excerpts from a speech by the then-president on Jan. 7, and two administrative officers who resigned after witnessing riots in the Capitol. The committee began proceedings by revealing that there will be further hearings in September. They also covered efforts by White House staff to try to get Trump to act as rioters began hacking the Capitol and desperate radio communications from Mike Pence’s security detail. Meanwhile, prosecutors have rested their case against far-right activist and Trump ally Steve Bannon, who is in court facing charges of criminal contempt of Congress. The Justice Department maintains that it simply “decided it was above the law” when it refused to comply with a Jan. 6 subpoena from the select committee. In other news, former first lady Melania Trump lashed out at her former chief of staff, Stephanie Grisham, alleging that she was not briefed on the rebellion on Capitol Hill.

The video shows that Trump literally cannot say that he lost the election
Donald Trump literally can’t seem to say that he lost the 2020 election in a video recently released by the Jan. 6 committee. As the commission investigating the attack on the US Capitol held its eighth presentation, it played a video of the then-president repeating over and over a speech condemning the violence that his staff had urged him to make. “I don’t want to say the election is over,” Mr. Trump is heard saying in a video shot by his staff on January 7. Andrew Buncombe covered the hearings for The Independent.

Secret Service radio traffic reveals desperate efforts to protect Pence on Jan. 6
Members of the U.S. Secret Service were unsure of their ability to successfully protect Mike Pence during the Jan. 6 attack and left emotional messages for their families as the uprising approached, the Jan. 6 panel revealed Thursday. The shocking revelation is one of the most devastating hearings yet: the vice president’s own security team was being terrorized by the president’s supporters through the capital as the same supporters who voted for Mr Pence in November shouted death threats at him . John Bowden reports from the hearing.

New York GOP gubernatorial candidate Lee Zeldin attacked
Chaotic scenes were witnessed after a gunman attempted to attack New York Republican gubernatorial candidate Lee Zeldin during his campaign speech. He was giving a speech when a man came on stage and appeared to start fighting with the congressman, said Katie Vincents, Zeldin’s campaign spokeswoman. “He’s fine. He’s not seriously injured. It’s just a chaotic scene over there,” said New York Democratic Party Chairman Nick Langworthy. Mr Langworthy said Mr Zeldin had “a bit of a scrape” but it was not what anyone would consider an injury. The attacker was taken into custody after being overwhelmed by a crowd and the MP continued his speech. He’s challenging incumbent Democratic Gov. Kathy Hotchul this November. Recap: Pence’s bodyguards bid farewell to family as Trump ‘chose not to act’ during Capitol attack

Voices: Now we know where Trump really was on January 6th
For 187 minutes, former President Donald Trump did nothing to stop the carnage he created. Really, why would he? He was watching the culmination of his months-long coup unfold. Tonight’s hearing gave a minute-by-minute look at the January 6 riot, during which we discovered some interesting new details about that day. For example: Trump sat in the White House dining room for three hours watching the Capitol attack on Fox News. He sent his tweet at 14:24 attacking Vice President Mike Pence fully aware that he was in danger. And instead of calling in the military or law enforcement to help stop the violence, he spent his time calling Republican senators to pressure them into helping him overturn the election. All this happened while his aides, allies and family members begged him to stop the violence.

Trump reacts to latest hearing
Referring to his earlier complaints about the select committee’s refusal to investigate his debunked claim that he recommended tens of thousands of troops to guard the Capitol on January 6, former President Donald Trump posted: The Unselect Committee refuses to do this because it ends their bogus case. Will there be any report or study by the Unelected on how the election was rigged and stolen? There’s so much evidence, but the Unselects don’t want to be seen in any way, shape or form – and for good reason – it would ruin their latest con! Oliver O’Connell22 July 2022 04:16
