Lucy Letby, 31, who pleaded not guilty to one count of eight counts of murder in connection with 10 counts of attempted murder of a baby, spoke only to confirm her identity and to hear the proceedings as she appeared via video link in Manchester Crown Court. Letby, who is currently being held at HMP Bronzefield in Ashford, Surrey, remained indifferent throughout the 45-minute hearing as unresolved legal issues were discussed between Ben Myers QC’s lawyer and Judge Mr. Justice Goss. The parents of two of her alleged victims sat in the public gallery during the hearing, while most watched via video from Chester Crown Court. Letby allegedly had a year of murder while working in the neonatal unit at Countess of Chester Hospital in Chester. He denies the murder of five boys and three girls and the attempted murder of five boys and five girls, all between June 2015 and June 2016. Letby, from Arran Avenue, Hereford, was remanded in custody by Justice Goss as the hearing was adjourned. He told the accused: “Lucy Letby will remain in custody where you are at present and there will be a new hearing in this case in early June. “You will need to attend, either in person or through the link. it is an issue that will be examined more closely. “ The date of October 4 has been set for Letby’s trial, which is expected to last up to six months in the Manchester Crown court.
