Mayor Sadiq Khan said the London Fire Brigade (LFB) was “under enormous pressure” as he urged people to be safe, adding that the situation was “critical”. It comes as several homes have been badly damaged after fires broke out in a village on the outskirts of east London. LFB sent 15 fire engines and around 100 firefighters to Wennington to tackle the blaze which appeared to be engulfing a number of buildings and adjacent fields. At least one house was completely destroyed. Aerial view shows smoke covering the village. The nearby fields appeared to be completely burnt and burning brightly. London Fire Brigade tweeted: “We have 15 fire engines and around 100 firefighters tackling this fire at The Green in Wennington.” Houses were burning near a fire station in the village. It’s coming up on the UK’s hottest day of the year, with temperatures reaching 40.2C at Heathrow Airport. Wennington is a small village with a population reported to be around 300 people.
