Residents and business owners described the incident as “scary” and said the actions of a PCSO woman were “very brave”. Police were called to the Poundland store on East Street shortly before noon following reports of an armed robbery. His car was later found on a nearby road after it had crashed. The police statement added: “Two passers-by – a couple of about 70 years old – went to the hospital after being hit by the fight. Police officers attended and the store remains closed while investigations continue at the scene. “The suspect allegedly left in a car found by patrols on nearby Whitehouse Street. He was involved in a collision with a car driving in the opposite direction as well as with several parked vehicles. “A man was arrested nearby and arrested on suspicion of offenses such as armed robbery, possession of an assault rifle and dangerous driving. Fortunately, the other driver did not need medical attention.” A local shopkeeper who runs the pawnshop next to the Poundland store – and who only wanted to be known as “Nick” – told Bristol Live what he saw.
