A teenage girl reported being raped by a man in Stanhope Park around 11:30 pm on Friday (April 8th). Minutes after receiving the initial call, police arrested a man nearby in connection with the shocking incident. A 21-year-old has since been charged with two counts of rape and one count of assault. He was remanded in custody to appear in Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court on Monday morning. A large part of the park was cordoned off on Saturday and police remained on the scene as a crime scene investigation team investigated the area. The park remains open to the public. Detectives want to talk to anyone who witnessed the incident or anyone who may have any information that might help their investigation.
