Gokul Prasad, a 45-year-old line technician, was upset after his boss, junior engineer Nagendra Kumar, offered to handle Prasad’s transfer if he sent “his wife [over] for a night.” Both worked at Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) Palia Power Station in Lakhimpur Kheri, India. Prasad had asked for a transfer so that he could work closer to home and not move so much, according to his wife. On April 9, Prasad poured diesel fuel into his body and set himself on fire in front of Kumar’s office. He was rushed to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and died the next day. Prior to his death, Prasad recorded a video complaining of years of harassment and labor abuse he received from Kumar and his assistant. Prasad claimed that Kumar abused his power and blamed him and his aide for his subsequent death. Prasad said he reported the abuse to police, but received no help and “nothing happened.” Gokul’s wife explained that she was harassed by Kumar and his assistant for three years before falling into “depression” while “taking medication”. “He went into depression and started taking medication, but he was not spared. He was transported to Aliganj and was having difficulty traveling. So he asked for a transfer closer to home. They told him, “Take your wife to sleep with us and we will take you,” said Gokul’s wife. He also claimed that no one came to help Gokul when he set himself on fire and Kumar “stood there watching”. Sanjiv Suman, a senior police officer, said Kumar and his assistant were now facing charges of inciting suicide and deliberate provocation under the Indian Penal Code. Both have been excluded from the UPCL. “The line manager had claimed that the junior engineer was demanding money and made vulgar statements when he asked for a transfer. We have registered a case. At department level, the junior engineer was made available and an investigation was ordered. “The case has been registered with the accusation of suicide”, said Schuman.
