Con Edison confirms that a well exploded shortly before 7 p.m. near 215 W. 43rd Street. Smoke was coming out of two other wells. Videos on social media showed people running after hearing a loud boom. West 43rd Street is closed to pedestrians and vehicles between 7th and 8th Avenue. Firefighters searched nearby properties and found high levels of carbon monoxide in an 18-story office building at 229 W. 43rd St. Crews are in the process of ventilating and mitigating the cellar and sub-cell of the site. The fires were caused by a damaged cable, according to Con Edison. A spokesman issued a statement saying: “A well exploded in the Times Square area this afternoon due to a cable failure and a second well was smoking. At present, there have been no customer interruptions, no reports of injuries or property damage. Our crews remain on the spot. “ No injuries were reported.
