A chartered bus carrying immigrants from Texas under the recently announced plan by Governor Greg Abbott arrived in Washington on Wednesday morning. The bus got off at an intersection a few blocks from the Capitol, near Union Station, shortly after 7 a.m. at Central. This location is also next to a building that houses the functions of many TV stores, including Fox News. The network aired footage showing migrants leaving the bus one by one, holding Manila envelopes and wearing hospital-type bracelets on their wrists. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed a letter last week directing the Texas Department of Emergency Management to provide bus routes to immigrants released from federal detention in cities along the border with Mexico – offered voluntarily. Despite assurances from Texas officials that the program is entirely voluntary, some civil rights groups have raised legal questions about the plan, particularly whether immigrants could feel compelled to board buses. Proponents of her case have been working to make the actual transcript of this statement available online. Critics, however, see a governor relying heavily on a hot-button issue to bolster his re-election campaign. White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki last week rejected the bus plan as an “advertising ploy.” According to Fox News, 23 migrants disembarked the bus on Wednesday morning and nodded to him as he left. The report included 19 men, four women and two young children, according to Fox, and included people from Nicaragua and Venezuela. In a statement early Wednesday, Abbott confirmed the arrival of the first bus and said it included migrants from Colombia, Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua. He said a second bus was on its way to Washington. “As the federal government continues to turn a blind eye to the border crisis, the State of Texas will remain steadfast in our efforts to fill the gaps and keep the Texans safe,” Abbott said. “With the immigrant buses in Washington, the Biden government will be able to meet the needs of the people who allow us to cross our borders more directly. “Texas must not bear the brunt of the Biden administration’s failure to secure our borders.” It was not immediately clear how the landing site for the first bus was selected, but social media users were quick to point out its proximity to the Republicans’ preferred cable news medium. “Greg Abbott sending a bus full of immigrants to Fox News headquarters proves what we already know: The Lone Star operation is nothing more than a taxpayer-funded advertising ploy,” the Texas Democrats wrote on Twitter. Several Venezuelan migrants on the bus told a CNN reporter that they arrived at the border on Sunday seeking asylum and were released pending the immigration process. The immigrants said they were offered the bus route to Washington and accepted it voluntarily. The first immigrants from Texas arrived at Union Station in Washington, DC, on Wednesday morning after Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said he would send immigrants to the capital to reprimand Biden’s border policies. I talked to some of these immigrants. 🧵 – Priscilla Alvarez (@priscialva) April 13, 2022
